Tours with the Egyptian Museum at Tahrir Square

The Egyptian Museum at Tahrir Square has lost its two most famous collections in recent years, and those who do not know this will plan their day incorrectly.

The official museum page of the ministry calls the building the oldest archaeological museum in the Middle East, and it lists what is there. Two things it no longer lists.

On 3 April 2021, 22 royal mummies were taken in a procession through Cairo to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization. Tutankhamun's gold mask and most of his funerary equipment are now in the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza. So if you want to stand before the mask in the old building at Tahrir Square, you will stand before an empty display case.

Nevertheless, this building is no ruin, and it is remarkable how stubbornly the opposite belief persists. What remains is the largest collection of pharaonic antiquities in the world with around 170,000 objects, a building from 1902 that is itself a monument, and three statues that are worth more for a visit to the plateau than any gold mask: those of the three men who built the pyramids.

Why the Combination Is Worth It

Egyptian Museum and pyramids in one day sounds like a rushed programme, and in Cairo traffic it is. Nevertheless, it is the most sensible combination this place offers, for a single reason.

On the plateau stand the buildings, and inside them there is nothing. The interiors are empty: no pictures, no inscriptions, no grave goods. Everything that was once inside is either gone or now stands in a museum. Whoever sees only the site sees the shell of a culture whose content lies twenty kilometres to the east.

In the Tahrir Museum stand the statues of Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure, the three builders. The seated figure of Khafre with the Horus falcon at the back of his head is considered one of the masterpieces of ancient Egyptian art, and it comes from the valley temple that you entered in the morning. The official description of the Khafre complex explicitly lists the statue niches in the hall of that temple and names the seated figure. Making this connection is the point of the shared day, and no guided tour at the site can replace it.

Add to that a peculiarity of the building that you have to like: it is not curated like a modern museum, but crammed like a 19th-century depot. Display cases with handwritten labels, sarcophagi in rows, hardly any explanation. For some, that is an imposition; for others, it is the last place in Egypt where archaeology still feels the way it once did.

The Order of the Day

If both are to happen on one day, the order determines success, and it is not freely selectable.

The plateau belongs in the morning. There is hardly any shade there, the heat builds from late morning, and the ticket office closes one hour before the end of visiting hours. The museum belongs in the afternoon: it is an indoor space, it closes at five o'clock, and the ticket counter closes at four o'clock. The reverse order does not work on any day of the year.

Between them lie 16.9 kilometres, for which a routing without traffic sets nineteen minutes. That is the theoretical figure. Expect double in the early afternoon and significantly more during rush hour; the route goes straight through the city centre and over one of the Nile bridges.

In practice, this means: a shared day needs an early start, and it ends at five o'clock. If you arrive at the gate only at ten, you will not manage the museum at leisure, but only at a run. For all those for whom this is too tight, there are two alternatives: the museum on another day, or the new building in Giza, which lies right next to the plateau and is dedicated to its own page.

What You Should Actually Look For in the Building

With around 170,000 objects, the museum cannot be seen in two hours, and the attempt ends in exhaustion. Three goals are worth the concentration.

The first are the statues of the pyramid builders on the ground floor. They are the direct link to the morning and are distributed across several rooms; the guide knows where.

The second is the burial of Yuya and Thuya, Tutankhamun's great-grandparents. It is completely preserved and was the most spectacular find of Egyptian archaeology before the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb. Today it stands almost unnoticed, because everyone is looking for something that is no longer here.

The third is the Narmer Palette, a slate plaque of barely sixty centimetres depicting the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt under one king. It is about five hundred years older than the pyramids and explains why they could exist at all: without a centrally administered state, no one builds a structure of this size.

Whoever has seen these three has understood the day. Everything else is a bonus, and for the bonus you need a second visit.

The Practical Part: Ticket, Bag, Camera

Three things regularly cost time at the entrance, and all three can be arranged in advance.

The ticket is bought on site, and the counter closes one hour before the building. That is the same rule as at the plateau and the most common reason why an afternoon visit fails: standing in front of the museum at 4:15 pm means you can no longer get in, even though the doors are still open.

Large bags stay outside. There is a storage facility, but it costs time, and if you arrive with the day backpack from the plateau, you should expect that. In practice, this means: what you need in the museum should fit in a small bag.

Photography with a mobile phone is free according to the house rules, flash is prohibited, and for commercial shots you need a permit plus a daily fee. For a tripod there is a separate ticket. These rules are on the official page and are actually enforced in the building, which is not a given with Egyptian museum rules.

One last note on the calculation: the museum entry comes on top of the site ticket and is not separately listed in 19 of the 23 offers in this category. Where an offer includes both, about twenty euros of the offer sum are passed-through entry fees and not the provider's profit.
