The question is rarely whether a trip to the Pyramids of Giza is worth it. It's how much of a Cairo day it will take.
That's no small matter. If you have three days in Cairo, a full-day tour will take up a third of your time. And because the traffic of a city of twelve million lies between your hotel and the gate, it's not the length of the tour that determines your day, but the length of the drive there and back.
For this page, we counted the available offers instead of guessing. In the reviewed catalog, there are 78 one-day offers that start in Cairo and definitely lead to the Giza Plateau. Tours in Giza itself, i.e., those departing from the plateau, are not counted; they appear later because they are the better answer for some readers.
A note on methodology, because the numbers on this page need to hold up. We counted the offers of a single provider, namely the partner this page works with. This is not a market overview and doesn't claim to be one. It's a large, reviewed sample in which every offer has its own ID, duration, and list of inclusions, which is exactly why you can read patterns from it that a handful of browsed offers wouldn't reveal.
What the count shows is a very uneven distribution. There aren't many formats to choose from. There are essentially two, with a gap in between.

Half of all offers last six to eight hours, and a good quarter last at most four. In between, in the four-to-six-hour range, there are only twelve.
This gap has a simple reason: the museum. As soon as an itinerary includes the Grand Egyptian Museum or the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in addition to the plateau, the half-day is no longer feasible. And because the museum has been the second must-see of any Cairo trip since its opening, programs shift upward. A day trip to the pyramids is now usually not a pyramid trip anymore, but a pyramid-and-museum trip.
For planning, this leads to a clear alternative. Either you take the package and give up the whole day, but with only one drive. Or you take the short version of at most four hours, are back by noon, and keep the afternoon, but pay for a second drive if you want to see the museum later.
There is a third way that the distribution doesn't show because it doesn't appear as an offer: the plateau on one day, the museum on the other, each in the early morning. That costs two drives, but spreads them over the best time of day and leaves two half-days free. If you have more than three days in Cairo, you should consider this option before booking an eight-hour package.
The second drive is the point most people underestimate. It costs not only money but another one to two hours in traffic, and at a time of day that is worse than early morning.

Pickup is the most important detail
Hotel pickup sounds like a minor detail, but it's the most important detail in the entire offer. It's included in 70 of the 78 counted offers.
In practice, it means the following. A vehicle picks you up at your hotel address, usually between seven and eight in the morning, and brings you back at the end. You don't have to negotiate a taxi, explain an address, or search for the entrance at the gate. That's worth more than it used to be on a site whose main entrance has been on a different side since the renovation than in any older travel guide.
The downside is the time. An early pickup is not a nuisance from the providers, but a calculation: Between eight and ten in the morning, Cairo's rush hour is in full swing, and the same route can easily take twice as long. If you're picked up at seven, you're at the gate by eight when it opens and have the quietest two hours of the day ahead of you. If you start at nine, you arrive at the same time as everyone else.
One limitation should be mentioned, which isn't in the catalog. Whether your address is in the pickup area depends on the district, and the metropolitan area is large. For accommodations in the center, in Zamalek, or near the plateau, this is rarely an issue; if you stay further out, you should provide the address before booking and have the pickup confirmed rather than assume it.
What the pickup doesn't cover is the return trip in evening traffic. On a full-day tour, the return falls exactly at the worst time. Expect significantly more than the outward journey in the evening, and don't schedule anything time-sensitive for that evening.
What's not in the offer
When comparing offers, it's worth looking at what's not stated. The count is uncomfortably clear on this point.
In 46 of the 78 offers, the plateau entrance is explicitly included. In six, it's explicitly excluded. In 25, nothing is said about it. A quarter of the market thus leaves open whether you'll pay again at the gate. That's no small matter, because the site entrance is a separate item according to the official overview of the ministry and doesn't cover the interiors.
It's even clearer with the pyramid interior. Of 78 offers, three include it. Five offer it as an add-on, 25 explicitly exclude it, and 45 say nothing about it. For whom the format doesn't fit
The question remains for whom a pyramid tour from Cairo is the right format at all. For most, yes, but not for two groups.
The first group lives near the plateau. If you stay in Giza, a departure from Cairo buys you exactly the drive you avoided by choosing your hotel. There are offers departing from the plateau, and they are simply the more sensible choice for this group.
The second group has a very short layover. For travelers with a long stopover in Cairo, there are special programs with airport transfer. The catalog lists them, but none of the reviewed offers of this type offers a German-speaking guide, and three of the four have practically no reviews. We therefore don't recommend a specific product here, but instead name the condition: with a stopover of less than eight hours, too little time remains after immigration, driving, and the return trip to make the effort worthwhile.
