At the Great Gate: card payment, ticket office closing, electric shuttle
Since 2025, the main entrance is the Great Gate on the Cairo-Fayoum desert road; the Sphinx Gate remains open but has no ticket office. Ticket sales at the counter end one hour before the site closes. The official opening hours contradict each other: 8 am to 4 pm is stated, and an older document says 7 am to 5 pm. Payment is exclusively by card; the counter does not accept cash, you only need it for tips and small items. Private vehicles have not been allowed on the plateau since 2025. Instead, you take the electric shuttle, which stops at the pyramids, the panoramic viewpoint, and the Sphinx, or you walk.
Who should book this long day and who should not
You should only book this excursion if your plans exactly match this long day trip and you accept the high price as part of the package. It is not suitable if you have little time or want a cheap, compact visit. As an alternative, the tour “Pyramids of Giza and Sphinx: Half-Day Private or Group Tour” is available: four hours, from 25 euros, without a designated German-speaking guide. If you want a German-speaking guide and still save money, “Pyramid, Memphis, Sakkara” is an alternative; it lasts three to eight hours, costs from 31 euros, and includes a German-speaking guide.
