The Pyramids of Giza are a half-day affair. That is the inconvenient figure with which every plan should begin, because it explains why there is no such thing as a vacation to the Pyramids of Giza in the strict sense. You do not fly to the pyramids and stay there for a week. You build an Egypt trip, and the pyramids are a morning within it.
This leads to the real question, which is different from the one most people start with: What format should the trip have so that this morning fits into it?
Three formats cover practically everything that organizers offer. The first is a city trip to Cairo. The second is a tour, almost always with a Nile cruise in the middle; the Nile cruise ships used for this are more similar to each other than the brochures suggest. The third is a week at the Red Sea with a day trip, often sold as a Nile cruise and swimming all-inclusive. All three include the plateau. They differ less in price than in what else you see and how much time you spend in the vehicle.

City Trip to Cairo: Two to Three Nights
The shortest form is also the most honest. If you want to see the pyramids and nothing else, you don't need a tour, but two to three nights in Cairo.
Within this time, the plateau, the Grand Egyptian Museum, and half a day in the old town fit comfortably, with room for traffic, which shifts every plan by an hour in this city. If you have three nights, you can add Saqqara and Dahshur, and it is worth more than the brochures suggest: There lies the architectural history of which Giza is only the result.
What this format does not provide is Upper Egypt. Luxor is located about 650 kilometers to the south. That is a domestic flight, not a day trip. If you want to see the royal tombs, you need a different travel format, not because of the price, but because of the distance.
A vacation in Cairo of this length rarely appears in catalogs because it hardly makes financial sense for organizers. Therefore, ready-made packages of this length are rare. Self-booking is common: flights and hotels booked separately, sightseeing booked in advance or on-site as individual items. This is not a disadvantage. With two nights, it is even the cheaper and more flexible solution.
Tour and Nile Cruise: Eight to Fourteen Days
Here lies the point where almost all descriptions become inaccurate, and it is important enough for its own paragraph.
The classic Nile cruise runs between Luxor and Aswan. These are around 200 kilometers in the south of the country, and it does not pass by Giza. The plateau is located more than 600 kilometers downstream. If you book a Nile cruise with the Pyramids of Giza, you are usually booking two things in one package: the boat trip in the south and a stay in Cairo before or after, connected by a domestic flight.
This is not bait-and-switch, but the only way it works at all. However, it significantly shifts expectations. You do not see the pyramids from the ship, nor from the water, but on a separate day by bus and guide, just like every other visitor.
A tour with the Pyramids of Giza realistically lasts eight to fourteen days. Ten days are sufficient for Cairo, the cruise, and Abu Simbel. Fourteen days allow for Alexandria or an additional week at the sea.
Two details deserve close attention with these packages because they are surprisingly often missing: whether the entrance fee to the plateau is included, and whether the tour is conducted in German. Neither is standard, and both cost more afterwards than they would have in the package.

Beach Holiday and Day Trip
The third format is numerically the most common because most German-speaking travelers fly to the Red Sea anyway. Combining pyramids and beach holiday practically means: a week in Hurghada or Marsa Alam, and from that, one day to Cairo.
Calculate this day honestly. From Hurghada, it is roughly 450 road kilometers in one direction, and the buses leave in the middle of the night. You stand in front of the Great Pyramid of Khufu around noon, after about six hours of travel, and in the evening you drive the same route back. Such a day lasts between eighteen and twenty-two hours, and the travel time is the larger part of it.
The alternative is flying. It costs more, shortens the distance to about one hour each way, and turns a brutal march into a long but ordinary day. Those who choose this format and have the choice should fly.
What speaks against this format is not ultimately the length, but the time of day. You reach the plateau at noon, in full sun and with the heaviest crowds, exactly when it is most unpleasant there. The first hour after opening, which every guide recommends, is not reachable from the coast.
Five days private with Nile cruise and balloon ride
The shortest format in which the cruise makes sense at all: Cairo, domestic flight, three nights on the ship between Luxor and Aswan, balloon ride in the morning. Which Format Fits You
The decision hinges on a single number, and it is not the budget. It is the number of nights you spend in the country.
With two to three nights, Cairo is the only sensible format. Everything else spends more time in transit than at the destination, and you notice that at the latest on the third day.
With eight to fourteen days, the tour is clearly worthwhile. The jump from Giza to Luxor is the greatest content gain an Egypt trip offers: Between the two places lie around a thousand years and two fundamentally different concepts of how a king is buried. If you only see Giza, you know the beginning of this development, but not its end.
With a week at the sea, the day trip is the correct answer, and the only open question is bus or flight.
And if you hesitate between all three, an observation helps: Almost never is a trip to the Pyramids of Giza booked. An Egypt trip is booked, and the pyramids are the morning that everyone remembers afterward.
