The answer has little to do with the pyramids themselves. The visit can be shortened arbitrarily if necessary, down to just one hour at the panoramic viewpoint. What cannot be shortened are three steps before and after, and they determine the outcome.

The first is entry. You need a visa, you need time at passport control, and in the arrival hall stands a queue you didn't plan for.

The second is the journey. From the large airport in the northeast to the site is forty to fifty kilometers across the metropolitan area. With free-flowing traffic, it takes an hour; during rush hour, easily two, in each direction.

The third is the return buffer. You must check in again, go through security again, and you cannot rely on everything going perfectly.

And your passport must still be valid for at least six months upon entry. This is the most common reason why a stopover doesn't even begin.

The free fourth way

For some travelers, there is a fourth way, and it is free. However, it depends on which airline you are flying with.

The Egyptian state carrier advertises a fee-free transit visa for ninety-six hours, issued at airports throughout the country. According to available descriptions, it applies to travelers whose outbound and onward flights are with this airline or two other Egyptian carriers, for stays between eight and ninety-six hours, for nationalities that receive a visa on arrival anyway, including EU member states. It is issued by the airline's transit office at the airport against presentation of passport and onward ticket. Whether this program is still running should be checked shortly before travel.

Two limitations apply, and they are more important than the advantage. First, the conditions could only be inferred from reports, not from an accessible official version; the airline's pages and Egyptian press sites were not readable. Second, such a program is time-limited and has been extended multiple times.

Therefore, you should not rely on it. Ask in writing during booking whether your specific flight qualifies, and still keep the fee for the visa on arrival ready. A free visa you don't get costs you the whole outing; a fee you don't need costs you nothing.

The return buffer remains, and it is the point where a nice outing turns into an expensive story.
