How far apart the Pyramids of Giza are is a question asked almost always for the same reason: In photos, the three structures stand close together, almost like a group. In reality, there is nearly a kilometer between the largest and the smallest.

This comes from the shooting angle. The classic images are taken with a long focal length from the panorama point in the southwest, and a telephoto lens optically compresses distances. If you stand there, you have a landscape before you, not a group.

Practically speaking, this means: A visit is a walk over several kilometers, partly on sand and without shade. The electric shuttles, which are included in the admission, take care of the longest sections, but the paths from the stop to the structure and once around a pyramid remain.

What is underestimated here is less the distance than the terrain. Between the structures lies loose sand and rubble; it goes up and down multiple times, and there is practically no shade. Five kilometers on the site therefore feel like significantly more on flat asphalt. Those who plan for this take sturdy footwear, more water than they think they need, and the shuttles for the long sections, rather than bravely walking everything and giving up exhausted at noon.

How far is it to the Sphinx?

Now to the figure that causes the most confusion online. For the distance from the pyramids to the Sphinx, values range from half a kilometer to over three kilometers, and both extremes are correct in their own way.

The reason is the difference between straight-line distance and driving distance. The figure lies in a depression on the eastern edge of the site, below the terrace with the pyramids. Walking across the site, it is just over half a kilometer from the largest pyramid. However, if you ask a map service for the route, you get the distance for a vehicle, and that goes around the outside. Hence the three kilometers.

The same applies to the structures relative to each other. Some sources measure from center to center, others from edge to edge, still others the driving route. Between these interpretations lie easily several hundred meters for structures with side lengths of over two hundred meters. Museum, Saqqara, Dahshur

Outside the fence, the scales change. The Grand Egyptian Museum is located about two kilometers away, so within sight, but not reachable on foot because a highway runs between them. The necropolis of Saqqara lies about twenty kilometers to the south, Dahshur around thirty, and neither is reachable without a vehicle.

And then there is a distance that is regularly underestimated. Anyone traveling from the Valley of the Kings to the Pyramids of Giza is not planning an excursion, but a journey: The royal tombs are located near Luxor, roughly five hundred kilometers to the south, which corresponds to a one-hour flight or an overnight train ride. Egypt's two most famous burial sites are not only far apart; they also separate roughly a thousand years.

For daily planning, this means: Everything inside the fence is a matter of minutes and step count. Everything outside is a matter of vehicle and day.
