How far apart are the Pyramids of Giza?

The question of how far apart the Pyramids of Giza are is almost always asked for the same reason: in photos, the three structures stand close together, almost like a group. In reality, there is nearly a kilometer between the largest and the smallest.

This comes from the direction of the shot. The classic images are taken with a long focal length from the panoramic viewpoint in the southwest, and a telephoto lens optically compresses distances. When you stand there, you have a landscape in front of you, not a group.

In practical terms, this means: a visit is a walk of several kilometers, partly on sand and without shade. The electric shuttle buses, which are included in the entrance fee, take care of the longest stretches, but the paths from the stop to the structure and around a pyramid remain.

What is often underestimated is not so much the distance as the terrain. Between the structures there is loose sand and rubble, it goes uphill and downhill several times, and there is practically no shade anywhere. Five kilometers on the site therefore feel like much more on flat asphalt. If you plan for this, you bring sturdy footwear, more water than you think, and use the shuttle buses for the long stretches, rather than bravely walking everything and giving up exhausted at midday.

How far is it to the Sphinx?

Now to the figure that causes the most confusion online. For the distance from the pyramids to the Sphinx, you'll find values between half a kilometer and over three kilometers, and both extremes are correct in their own way.

The reason is the difference between the straight-line distance and the driving route. The figure lies in a depression at the eastern edge of the site, below the terrace with the pyramids. On foot across the site, it's a good half kilometer from the largest pyramid. If you ask a map service for a route, you get the distance for a vehicle, which goes around the outside. Hence the three kilometers.

The same applies to the structures themselves. Some sources measure from center to center, others from edge to edge, and still others the driving route. Between these interpretations, with structures over two hundred meters on a side, the difference can easily be several hundred meters. Museum, Saqqara, Dahshur

Outside the fence, the scale changes. The grand museum is about two kilometers away, so within sight, but not reachable on foot because a highway runs in between. The necropolis of Saqqara is about twenty kilometers to the south, Dahshur about thirty, and both are inaccessible without a vehicle.

And then there is a distance that is regularly underestimated. If you want to go from the Valley of the Kings to the Pyramids of Giza, you're not planning an excursion but a journey: the royal tombs are near Luxor, about five hundred kilometers to the south, which corresponds to an hour's flight or a night on the train. Egypt's two most famous burial sites are not only far apart; they are also separated by about a thousand years.
