The entrance to the Pyramids of Giza is a question with two completely different answers, depending on who is asking.

The first concerns the site: Which gate do you enter through? There are two, located at opposite ends of the complex, and only at one can you buy a ticket. If you get this wrong, you can easily lose an hour, and that's in traffic.

The second concerns the monument: Where do you go inside the Great Pyramid? There are also two openings there, one ancient and one medieval, and the one you walk through is not the original built entrance.

The Main Gate in the Southwest

The main gate has been in the southwest since 2025, on the desert road to Fayyum, and it is the standard answer for all first-time visitors.

There is a newly built visitor center. It has ticket offices, recently also four self-service machines for buying tickets with a bank card, food and drink outlets, toilets, and space for vehicles that must stay outside. The trial operation of the revamped site began in spring 2025, and since then it has been the regular access to the Giza Plateau.

The practical advantage lies in the order. The electric shuttle departs from the main gate, and its first stop is the viewpoint in the southwest, from which all three monuments can be seen side by side. So you get the overview first and then the details, and you walk downhill rather than uphill.

The disadvantage is the location. The gate is on the far edge, far from the city and most accommodations. If you come from central Cairo, it's a detour compared to that.

The old gate near the hotel in the northeast is closed as a main entrance. It still appears in older travel guides, videos, and some map services, and that's exactly where people go every day who have relied on printed information. If your navigation device offers a gate on Pyramids Road as a destination, that is not the destination you need.

The Sphinx Gate Has No Ticket Office

The second gate is in the east, right next to the Sphinx, where the city meets the fence. It is considerably closer to everything people usually do: the guesthouses in the neighborhood, the restaurants, the tram axis towards the city center.

And it has a feature that makes the difference between a good and a ruined morning: there is no ticket sales there. If you arrive without a ticket, you won't be let in. No cash, no credit card, and no friendly asking will help, because there is simply no place that could sell.

The detour to the other gate does not go through the site, but around the outside, through Giza traffic. Depending on the time of day, that's twenty minutes or much more. That's exactly where most of the lost mornings at this place come from.

If you want to use the Sphinx gate, you need the ticket beforehand. But then it is the more pleasant access: shorter approach, no crowds at the counter, and the Sphinx is right behind the checkpoint.

For a second visit or a short stop, it is therefore often the better choice. If you already know the site and just want to go to the Sphinx or the valley temple again, you save the drive around half the complex and after the checkpoint you are right where you wanted to be.

In at the Front, Out at the Back

The fact that both gates are entrances and exits opens up the most elegant way to visit, and it has a catch.

The way: enter in the southwest, exit in the east. You start at the top at the viewpoint with the overview, work your way down past the three monuments, and end at the Sphinx, which thus forms the conclusion instead of overshadowing everything else at the beginning. The path goes downhill, which is not a minor point at thirty degrees, and you end up where Cairo begins again.

The catch is the driver. If he dropped you off at the main gate and is waiting there, then he is at the wrong end as soon as you come out in the east. That's not a catastrophe, but it costs him a drive around the entire site and you a waiting time in exactly the place where the touts are most pushy.

The solution is banal and yet rarely chosen: tell him beforehand where you will come out. A pre-booked driver will accept a different pickup point without any problem, a spontaneously hailed taxi driver rather not.

There is also a small thing that surprises at the end of the day: you are checked when leaving as well. At the eastern gate, it therefore backs up in the late afternoon when several groups come out at the same time. If you are in a hurry, either leave earlier or take the other exit.

A Hole from the 9th Century, Not the Ancient Entrance

That leaves the other meaning of the word, and it leads from the site into the monument.

The entrance to the Great Pyramid of Khufu, through which all visitors go today, is not the ancient one. It is a roughly hewn hole in the north face, created in the 9th century during the search for treasures. The original entrance sits a few meters higher and significantly further east and was not visible from the outside behind the smooth casing. If you look at the north side, you can see both openings one above the other.

Practically, that means only one thing for planning: the way in is on the north side, i.e., on the side facing the old gate and the city, and not where the shuttle first drops you off. What it looks like inside, how long it takes, and whether the separate ticket is worth it is on the page about the interior.

With the other two pyramids, it is less conspicuous. The middle one has two entrances on the north side, the smallest one has one, and in both cases visitors use the ancient route.

For the Sphinx, on the other hand, there is no entrance at all. The statue is fenced off, the area is not entered, and it is viewed from the elevated terrace on the east side. According to the official overview of the site, this area is part of the regular entry; there is no separate ticket for it, and if someone wants to sell you one there, they are selling you nothing.
